Congratulations to Barbara and John who tied the knot on Saturday, August 27 in Toronto, Ontario! Sheena and I started off the day meeting John at his house where we photographed him and his groomsmen getting ready, having some drinks and hanging out. But, we still felt like we needed to be a little more creative so we took the guys outside on the street and to a park nearby where we had some fun with shadows since the sun what in a great position for that. Before we knew it, it was time to leave and drive to Barbara's house so that we could capture the moments and events taking place over there. We arrived at Barb's house around 11am and were greeting with lots of excited kids running around enjoying the build up to the wedding. Sheena spent time photographing the kids and details around the house while I was upstairs with Barb and the bridesmaids as they helped her get ready and finish the final touches. It was so much fun to see her nieces watch Barb with glowing eyes as she made her way down the stairs for the first time. We also had time to take portraits of Barb on her very funky sofa as well as her family in their large backyard.
We then drove to St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in downtown Toronto for the ceremony. They church itself is a fascinating venue. It was founded in 1909 and is the oldest Greek Orthodox church in Canada. Sheena and I were overwhelmed with the photographic elements that surrounded us and had to remember to stay focused on the bride and groom during the service! Once Barb and John were officially married, we made our way to the Brick Works in Toronto.
Sheena and I know the Brick Works very well. We photograph lots of families and engagements there, but this was the first time we photographed a bride and groom as well as their wedding party and extended family. We decided to avoid the easy, standard photographs that are often taken at the Brick Works and set up the family overlooking the forest and pond rather than have them up against the brick walls or bright doors. We then took Barb and John into a field for some photographs of the couple as well as upstairs near the gallery where I found an amazing outdoor corridor to frame them in and then down by the water with the wedding party.
Finally, it was time to leave and make our way to Spirale Banquet and Convention Centre. Here, Sheena and I set up our reception lighting and had a blast photographing all the guests interacting and the kids running around and dancing all night. Barb and John had a beautiful first dance and before we knew it, it was time for us to put the gear away and make our way home.
We have no doubt that the party lasted long into the night and we can't wait to hear all about Barb and John's honeymoon which they left for the next day. All the best in your new lives together!
